A Little Slice of Joy

Two kids holding a slice of fresh, seeded watermelon to the camera

In celebration of our upcoming name change, we asked our community to share their happiest food memories, and we were so touched by what we read.

Here are three of our favourites:

🍓Grandma’s Jam & Cream Scones

When I was young, if I felt sad, my Grandmother would make a batch of scones, and we would eat them warm with butter, jam and cream. Everything was made from scratch, and she and I sitting with those scones and a big pot of tea always made everything seem better.

🥕Healthy Chocolate Muffins

I’m a foster Mumma. It can be a heart-wrenching journey at times, but it’s also a profound privilege to share my home with the most precious children.

Most Fridays, I take one of my boys—let’s call him James—to see his biological mum. For the sake of privacy, I’ll call her Juni. I can see that Juni loves him deeply, but after a difficult childhood spent growing up in residential care, and being so young herself, she hasn’t had the capacity to care for him.

Last Friday, I packed a lunchbox for James to take along to their visit. When I came to pick him up afterwards, Juni told me she’d noticed the chocolate muffin I packed for him and said it looked delicious. She asked what was in it, so I told her: flour, cacao, eggs, carrot, and zucchini.

Juni smiled and said she thought she’d spotted a carrot in it. Then she shared something with me... One of the only good memories she has from growing up in residential care was a youth worker who she felt truly cared about her. This worker used to make her chocolate muffins too—sneaking vegetables into them to help keep her healthy, because she struggled to eat vegetables otherwise.

Juni paused and then said she was glad that someone was now doing the same thing for James.

It was a small moment, but such an intimate and tender one between us. I’m very grateful for it.

I’m also very grateful to be able to shop at Spray-Free Farmacy. I’m passionate about providing really quality food to my children to boost them however much I can after their little systems haven’t received the best start to life.

🍉Spitting Watermelon Seeds

Growing up, we would regularly visit our great aunt, who lived in a country town, where my Dad grew up. One day, after serving us some watermelon, he told us how he used to sit with his cousins on the back steps of the old Queenslander while eating watermelon and having a competition to see who could spit the seeds the farthest. We took that as encouragement to do the same! So there we were—my sister and I, and a friend who lived across the road from our great aunt—spitting watermelon seeds as far as we could from her back step. When who should walk around the corner of the house, but our great aunt! She was not impressed, and even less impressed it was our Dad who gave us the idea!

Our poor children are missing out on this fun with all the seedless watermelons around. They didn't even know watermelons had seeds until recently!

Food connects us, comforts us, and makes life sweeter in ways big and small. These moments remind us why we do what we do: to celebrate real, joyful food that brings people together.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories - we’re so grateful to be part of a community that values the power of good food.
