Our Story

Ottaway Family Joy Wholefoods

Hey there! We’re Kristen and Trevor Ottaway, and together with our two daughters we call North Brisbane home.

Back in 2015 we were simply trying to solve a problem for our own family.

We cared deeply about the food we were eating and where it came from, but finding truly clean, nourishing food wasn’t easy. Our Saturdays were spent racing between farmers markets, organic stores and supermarkets just to piece together a week’s worth of groceries.

Then we met a local farmer friend, Kelly Strow, known as Farmer Kel. One day we asked her to put together a box of produce for us from the farms she worked with.

The quality was incredible. The food was fresh, seasonal and grown with care.

Our friends started asking if they could get boxes too, and before long we were packing produce into the back of our car and delivering them around Brisbane.

That small idea became Spray Free Farmacy.

Growing something bigger

What started as a simple produce box quickly grew into something much bigger.

More farmers joined us. More families discovered us. And a beautiful community began to form around a shared belief that food should nourish both people and the planet.

Over time our range expanded beyond fruit and vegetables to include pasture raised meat, dairy, pantry staples and wholefoods from local producers.

Today we work with an incredible network of farmers and food makers who share our values around soil health, animal welfare and growing food the right way.

Every week we now deliver fresh food to more than 500 families across South East Queensland.

And we still feed our own family the exact same food.

A New Chapter

After 10 years as Spray Free Farmacy, we realised our name no longer captured the full spirit of what we had become.

Our mission had grown beyond simply being spray free. It was about supporting farmers who care for their soil and animals. It was about nourishing families with real wholefoods.

And most of all, it was about the joy that comes from food grown well and shared with the people we love.

So in 2026 we became Joy Wholefoods.

A name that reflects what we’ve always believed: When food is grown with care, it brings joy to everyone involved farmers, families and the planet.

Why this matters to us

Our mission today is simple:

Support farmers who care for their soil.

Make real food easier for families to access.

Help people feel confident about what they’re feeding themselves and their children.

Because healthy soil grows healthier food. And healthy food helps people thrive.

Kristen's Story

Behind Joy Wholefoods is a very personal journey.

For Kristen, this business began with a search for better health.

Like many people, she believed she was eating well. But she struggled with constant bloating, fatigue, digestive issues and relentless sugar cravings. Doctors told her diet wasn’t the problem and that medication was the only option.

But something didn’t feel right.

A book called No Impact Man by Colin Bevan opened her eyes to the hidden realities of modern food systems - pesticides, ultra processed ingredients, factory farming and the impact these have on both our health and the environment. This sparked years of research, documentaries and learning about food, soil and the way modern diets affect our bodies.

When Kristen shifted to a diet based on organic, whole foods, everything changed. Her energy returned. Her digestion improved. The cravings disappeared.

It was a powerful reminder that the food we eat truly matters.

This experience eventually led to Kristen creating a wellness community called Inspired Living Events, where people gathered to watch food documentaries, share organic meals and learn about healthy living.

One thing became clear again and again. People wanted access to real food grown by local farmers. But it wasn’t easy to find. And that realisation planted the seed for what would eventually become Spray Free Farmacy, and later, Joy Wholefoods.

Join the Joy

Today we feel incredibly grateful to work with farmers who grow beautiful food and to serve a community that cares deeply about what they eat.

We’d love for you to be part of it.
