For a lot of us, oats are eaten almost every day during winter, and are considered one of the healthiest pantry staples. They’re warm, comforting, affordable, full of fibre, and usually sitting there in a wholesome-looking bag with words like “natural” and “heart healthy” on the front.
But there’s one thing that isn’t talked about enough, and that’s the fact that conventional oats can also be one of the foods most likely to contain glyphosate residue.
And once you understand why, it suddenly makes a lot more sense why so many people are now switching to organic oats instead.
First Things First… What Is Glyphosate?
If you’re new here, we talk about glyphosate a lot. It is the active ingredient in many weedkillers, including products like Roundup. It’s one of the most widely used herbicides in the world.
Farmers spray it to kill weeds, but in some farming systems it’s also used as a desiccant, meaning it’s sprayed on crops shortly before harvest to dry them out evenly and speed up harvesting.
Why Oats Are a Big Concern
Oats are particularly vulnerable to glyphosate contamination because glyphosate can be used close to harvest time in conventional grain farming systems.
In Australia, glyphosate is widely used across grain production because our climate can be unpredictable. Wet conditions near harvest can delay crops drying naturally, so chemical drying is often used to make harvesting quicker and more uniform. Australia also has huge broadacre farming systems, where efficiency and timing are critical.
This results in residues remaining on the finished grain.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has confirmed that glyphosate residues are commonly detected in cereal-based foods, including breakfast cereals, bread and infant cereals.
And while Australian regulators maintain these levels are generally within legal limits, there’s not a whole lot of research into the effects that repeated exposure over time has on our health.
The Health Concerns Around Glyphosate
Glyphosate is one of the most controversial agricultural chemicals in the world.
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organisation, classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
Research has also explored potential links between glyphosate exposure and:
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
- Hormone disruption
- Oxidative stress and inflammation
- Liver and kidney stress
- Gut microbiome disruption
- DNA and cellular damage
Some studies suggest glyphosate may affect beneficial gut bacteria because it works by disrupting a biochemical pathway found in plants and certain microbes. While the science is still evolving, this has raised concerns about long-term effects on gut health and overall well-being.
Why Spray-Free & Organic Oats Matter
Organic and spray-free oat farming does not allow synthetic herbicides like glyphosate.
That means organic oat farmers rely on crop rotation, soil health, timing, and mechanical weed control instead of spraying weedkillers over crops.
Choosing organic oats can help reduce your exposure to glyphosate residues, particularly if oats are something you eat regularly in porridge, overnight oats, smoothies, muesli bars or baking.
For families with young children who are eating oats daily, this can feel especially important.
Because when you think about it, oats are often one of the very first foods we feed babies.
But Aren’t “Safe Limits” Enough?
Food regulators assess glyphosate based on what’s considered an “acceptable” daily intake. But critics argue these assessments often look at chemicals individually, not the cumulative effect of being exposed to multiple pesticides every single day from different foods.
The fact is that we don’t fully know yet, which is why more Australians are choosing to prioritise organic foods for products they eat most often, especially grains, oats, fruit and vegetables known to carry higher pesticide residues.
