From: Sovereign Foods

Grown without synthetic pesticides or herbicides by the Casaretto family at Casarosa Almonds in South Australia's Riverland, these almonds are harvested, sorted, shelled, and dry-roasted entirely on-site. With no added oils, preservatives, or flavourings, the natural richness and sweetness of the almond comes through clearly in every handful.

About the Grower

Casarosa Almonds is a family-owned orchard and processing operation based in Taylorville, just north of Waikerie in the Riverland. Third-generation farmer Jarrad Casaretto manages the property alongside his parents, applying regenerative, low-input farming practices in one of Australia's most established almond-growing regions. The orchard is bee-friendly and pesticide-free, with a strong emphasis on soil health and biodiversity. Every step from cracking and roasting through to retail packing is handled on-site, giving the family complete oversight of freshness and quality at each stage.

Why We Love Them

  • 100% Australian grown and processed on a single family farm
  • Dry roasted on-site with no added oils or preservatives
  • Chemical-free, bee-friendly farming practices
  • Naturally rich in vitamin E, monounsaturated fats, protein, and magnesium
  • Excellent crunch with a buttery, naturally sweet flavour
  • Versatile for snacking, baking, and everyday cooking

About the Varieties

Throughout the year, the available almond variety will change depending on what Jarrad and his team have ready to harvest. Each variety has its own character:

  • Nonpareil - Australia's most widely grown almond, with a flat shape, smooth light-coloured skin, mild flavour, and a distinctive sweet finish. A late-season harvest that tends to sell quickly.
  • Carmel - An early-season variety, slightly smaller and rounder than Nonpareil, with a softer skin and a more intense almond flavour.
  • Carina - A mid-sized almond with a sweet, buttery taste and high yield. Also used as an early-season pollinator for Nonpareil.
  • Price - A smaller almond with a sweet, buttery flavour, well suited to both snacking and use as an ingredient. Originally from California, it is used to cross-pollinate with Nonpareil trees.
  • Monterey - A smooth, soft-shell variety with large, flat, meaty kernels. A popular choice for both eating and baking.
  • Independent - A relatively new variety developed in 2008 and one of the few self-pollinating almonds available. Tends to be smaller with a higher oil content.

Culinary Uses

  • Snack on their own or combine with dried fruit as a trail mix
  • Chop over yoghurt, porridge, or green salads
  • Blitz into homemade almond butter
  • Fold into granola, muffins, or energy balls
  • Grind into almond meal for gluten-free baking

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. For best results, particularly in warmer climates, refrigerate or freeze to extend freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these almonds roasted in oil?
No. They are dry roasted on-site without any added oils or preservatives, just the almond itself.

Are they certified organic?
Not certified organic, but grown under a strict chemical-free regime with no synthetic inputs, in line with regenerative and sustainable farming principles.

Are these Australian grown?
Yes. All almonds are grown in the Riverland region of South Australia by the Casaretto family at Casarosa Almonds, unlike many supermarket almonds which are imported.
