This medium grain Tachiminori rice is grown on rain-fed paddocks at Marlivale Farm in Goolmangar, New South Wales. Lightly polished to a golden hue, it cooks into firm, flavourful grains with a naturally nutty character that holds its structure well, making it a reliable choice for salads, warm bowls, and everyday meals.

About the Farm

Marlivale Farm is run by Andrea, Frank, Sophie, and Mac, two of five generations who have worked the homestead on Widjabul Wia-bal country in the Northern Rivers. What began as a dairy farm has been transformed over decades into pecan orchards and dryland rice fields, with the landscape restored through a soil-first approach and seasonal farming. Since 1988, the family has been committed to producing nutritious rice and pecans with minimal intervention and a deep respect for the land.

What Is Tachiminori Rice?

  • A Japanese upland variety well suited to dryland farming without irrigation
  • Grown using natural rainfall only, with no paddy flooding required
  • Lightly polished to retain essential fats and fibre while giving the grain its distinctive golden colour
  • Firm texture with a satisfying bite and a naturally nutty flavour

Why We Love It

  • Grown and packed on a genuine family-run Australian farm
  • Dryland farming reduces water input while still delivering a premium grain
  • Medium grain with full texture and flavour, suited to home cooks and professionals alike
  • Minimal processing preserves nutrient density and cooking versatility
  • A rare Australian-grown rice that holds its own against global varieties

Culinary Uses

  • Use as the base for grain salads, rice bowls, or stir-fries
  • Pair with roasted vegetables or spiced meats where structure and bite are important
  • Prepare as sushi rice by adjusting water ratios and cooling gently
  • Make ahead for meal prep as this rice reheats well without turning mushy
  • Serve in warm winter bowls with beans, greens, and herb-rich dressings

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place and use within 12 months for best results. In warm or humid conditions, refrigerating or freezing will help maintain freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this rice need to be rinsed?
Rinsing is optional. A light rinse can reduce surface starch but is not essential for this variety.

How do I cook it?
Rinse 1 cup of rice, add 2 cups of water, and simmer covered for 35 to 45 minutes until the water is fully absorbed. Remove from heat and rest, still covered, for 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

Is it certified organic?
Not certified organic, but the farm operates on a soil-first philosophy, avoiding synthetic chemicals and focusing on regenerative, minimal-input practices throughout the growing season.
